Dewey's Labor Day Message
Today is Labor Day, a day we honor and recognize the works and contributions of laborers to the United States. Although Labor Day is not a union holiday, it is a national holiday and without unions it would not exist.
The labor movement is largely responsible for federal laws that protect workers’ rights to collectively bargain with their employer and helped lay the foundation for many of the workplace rules we have in place today. These include the 40-hour work week, minimum wages, overtime pay, an end to child labor, Social Security, and the Family and Medical Leave Act. Without the labor movement, the working world would be an entirely different place.
I wish everybody a happy and safe Labor Day. Let’s celebrate labor!
