Crossover Day is a big day in the Georgia Legislature. It is day 28 of the legislative session when bills that have passed one chamber pass over to the other chamber to be considered.
That big day was last Thursday and I’m pleased to report that my bill, HB 494, the Moped bill has passed the Georgia House and will now be considered by the Georgia Senate.
Under current Georgia law, moped riders are not required to carry liability insurance, but can still ride their mopeds on the streets. HB 494 requires moped riders to have liability insurance so if they have an accident with a motor vehicle, the other driver does not have to make an uninsured motorist claim.
Other bills
From now until Sine Die, the Georgia House will consider bills passed in the Georgia Senate.
Some of these bills are just not good and some, frankly leave me speechless.
SB 74 – Library crimes: Librarians in public libraries, K-12 schools and colleges could face prosecution if they provide sexually explicit materials to minors. Georgia Librarians aren’t peddling smut to minors anywhere. And there really isn’t any definition of what these Republicans consider “pornography” except they use this to target book subject that make then uncomfortable. For instance, they have used this definition to ban “The Diary of Anne Frank”.
SB 68 and SB 69 – Tort Reform: SB 68 would make it harder to bring lawsuits and win large verdicts while Senate Bill 69 limits who can finance lawsuits. People have a right to ask their government for redress and this limits that right.
One good thing is that the House and Senate members agreed to spend more than $850 million on aid after Hurricane Helene did billions of dollars in damage in Georgia last September.
